Richard Riakporhe might need more than just his renowned knockout power to defeat Chris Billam-Smith, warns Frazer Clarke.
Riakporhe faces the toughest challenge of his professional career on Saturday, aiming to dethrone Billam-Smith as the WBO cruiserweight world champion.
Having previously beaten Billam-Smith by split decision in 2019, Riakporhe is aware that he will be up against an improved version of his British rival.
Known for his formidable knockout ability, Riakporhe has been advised by heavyweight contender Clarke to rely on his boxing skills in the upcoming Selhurst Park showdown.
“Richard is definitely a puncher, and punchers sometimes rely too heavily on their knockout power,” Clarke said. “I’ve been encouraging him to trust his boxing skills because, at this level, one punch might not be enough against a crafty opponent.”
Riakporhe has secured 13 of his 17 victories by knockout, most recently stopping Dylan Bregeon in the second round last November.
Clarke commended Riakporhe’s growth over the years and expressed confidence in his ability to achieve the biggest win of his career this weekend.
“It’s about getting Richard to believe in himself and let his hands go, which he has been doing,” Clarke said. “He’s at the right weight, looks good, and is extremely focused and ready for the fight.”
Clarke noted that Riakporhe’s relaxed yet confident demeanor is a positive sign. “He’s confident in his training and excited about boxing in a football stadium for a world title. It’s a massive achievement, and he will realize its significance later.”
Riakporhe has been training with Clarke at Loughborough, highlighting the potential for him to move up a weight class in the future.
“I’ve sparred with Richard, and it’s never easy work. He’s a heavyweight fighting in the cruiserweight division,” Clarke remarked. “Training with someone of his caliber is beneficial because it keeps you sharp and focused.”
Clarke emphasized the value of training with a competitive edge, rather than just hitting the bag. “We do a lot of sparring and scenario work, which is very beneficial.”
